Gloria Bell (2018)
If you are, like me, a Julianne Moore fan, then, Gloria Bell is a must-watch .. This movie is not necessarily for anyone because unlike the noisy CGI driven movies that dominate the cinemas today, here is a quiet character study movie about a lonely 50 something divorcee who enjoys dancing in clubs as a diversion to her otherwise mundane life. Don't expect any complicated storyline or something big or a plot twist to happen because there won't be any. Instead, we are invited to experience and be part of someone's life as she goes through life's ups and downs and how she copes with these. One can say nothing much really happens, and yet, by the end of the movie, you will feel that so much have been shared that you will feel like you know Gloria Bell intimately.
The movie ultimately belongs to the two main stars, Julianne Moore and John Turturro as their chemistry on screen and wonderful performance makes the characters come alive and very believable, which means the audience becomes more emotionally engaged and involved as the movie progresses. The movie's great soundtrack of familiar and catchy 80's pop songs are a constant delight with the lyrics of many of the selected songs given new meaning as they capture our main character's moments perfectly.
Julianne Moore is in her top form her and I suspect this role is actually quite a breeze for her given it is devoid of any heavy dramatic themes like fighting Alzheimer in Still Alice or, fighting terrorism in Bel Canto. However, it doesn't diminish the accomplishment of this gifted actress at all, and for me, this is one of my favourite roles from her in a long while. Highly recommended watch!!
