Spider-man: Far From Home (2019)

Tom Holland's take on Spider-man has always been light hearted and less ambitious than the usual Marvel superhero blockbusters. Often, in such cases, less can actually be more, and happily, that is the case with this third solo outing for Tom Holland as the web-swinger. Without the burden of having the screen be cramped and overcrowded with superheroes, what we have is a more focused storyline and plot, which in turn allowed the movie to have more time in developing its characters into more than just props or plot devices. There are also lots of jokes amidst the action, which comes across very naturally which makes the movie a great fun ride. The current Spider-man reboot with a very young Tom Holland wanted to attract a younger audience, and I believe it has succeeded as our hero struggles with normal teenage issues while saving the world (again).

I always feel that a superhero movie succeeds when it can manage to have likeable and believable supporting characters. Far From Home manages to do this with its always witty script delivered by these supporting roles in brief by effective scenes. Jake Gyllenhaal almost stole the show as the mysterious Mysterio, and Marisa Tomei as the sexy Aunty May never looked lovelier or funnier. An added bonus is the setting which is in Europe. Venice, Prague, Berlin and London provided a refreshing change from the usual high rise concrete jungles of America.

All in all, I found Spider-man: Far From Home very entertaining. It may not be perfect, but it manages to satisfy me more than the 3 hours of Avengers: End Game. As always don't be too much of a hurry to leave the cinema hall when the movie ends, because there are two post credit teasers. The first teaser is pretty much an important epilogue to the movie and sets the stage on what's next for Peter Parker. The second teaser which only comes on at the very end of the reel, is tied in to the greater Avengers universe, but makes less sense.
