Bond #9: The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)

Roger Moore returns to play James Bond in Bond #9. He definitely seem more at ease and confident with his role this second time around. This also seem to establish Roger Moore's own style and take on the character as he plays James Bond firmly tongue in cheek to the extent of self parody. Indeed even the other recurring characters in the series seem to be having a jolly good time as they take turns with their humour. While purists may complain that this is not the Bond they expect, I beg to differ and feel this is not necessarily a bad thing. I think Roger Moore is perfect to play James Bond in this light hearted mood while Sean Connery will probably struggle with this level of cheekiness and humour.

The Man With The Golden Gun is a vast improvement over Roger Moore's inaugural take in Live and Let Die. There is a lot to like and enjoy about this outing. Apart from the humour, it has Christopher Lee giving us a great villain, Scaramanga, whose stare and looks alone can turn one pale in the face. Somehow his Dracula persona still oozes through!! My only complaint is that he seems to have been defeated by Bond all too easily ....His sidekick, Nick Nack, the midget who looks adorable and cute, but can be equally deadly! Nick Nack is perfectly cast as played by Herve Villechaize, the pin sized superstar of television's hit series Fantasy Island. I dare say he stole the scenes each time he appears.

Then there are the Bond girls! Maud Adams and Britt Ekland provided the eye candy this time in contrasting ways. Maud's Andrea is cool and sophisticated while Britt's Goodnight is just a bubbling dumb blonde. Both have a fair level of airtime to make their presence felt but alas still project women in a highly unfavourable manner.

The location include Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand. Most memorable is the stunning scenery  and beauty offered by the islands of Thailand. Indeed the island of villain Sacramanga, is affectionately referred to as James Bond Island up to today. It can be found in the Phang Nga Bay near Puket

Finally the theme song ... sung by Lulu, this may not have that evergreen classic sound of Goldfinger or You Only Live Twice. However, it is a catchy tune and Lulu's husky and powerful voice sounded great.

All in, while The Man With The Golden Gun may not be the best entry in the series, it is a fun and entertaining romp. It makes me look forward to what's in store next from Roger Moore.
