Paradise Hills (2019)
Paradise Hills has a stellar female cast headlined by Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil), and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians). Described as a science fiction fantasy thriller where young women are mysteriously captured in a Paradise island to be trained as proper girls before they are returned to society as an "improved" version of themselves.
Sounds interesting on paper and definitely worthy of a watch. Right? Wrong! This is one tedious excuse for a movie. Everything about it just does not work. The low budget is painfully obvious with the cheap looking sets, costumes and basic special effects. The acting is also atrocious and it was painful to watch accomplished actresses perform like amateurs. The storyline was also illogical and ridiculous. The watch would have been a bit more bearable had the film makers chosen to provide some dark humour and poke fun on itself given its preposterous premise. The film was directed and partly written by one Alice Waddington, and may appeal to feminists because of its heavy female cast and a female director.
The only thing positive I have to say is that the film is mercifully short with a running time of about 90 minutes. In fact, even that, felt too long! I shall keep my review short as well. Just know that this is one big waste of talent, and even bigger waste of time.
