Into the Dark: A Nasty Piece of Work (2019)
Into the Dark's episode for December is as expected centered around the Christmas and New Year celebration. This episode plays purely for laughs as it sets the tone immediately with its set up of over worked and disgruntle executives working under a Scrooge like head. After feeling depressed by the company's announcement of no year end bonus due to weaker performance, two of the leading executives were invited to the house of their manager for a private Christmas dinner which garnered hopes of a promotion for at least one of them. Bringing their wives along, the two executives were in for a night to remember and something they never bargained for.
The plot is juvenile with the humour and mood deliberately campy and over the top. It is both good and bad news for the audience. The good news is that as a comedy the episode is an enjoyable mindless fun. The bad news is that that's not really what I want from an Into the Dark episode. We have grown accustomed to expect the unexpected and be subjected to at least some creative torture and violence to be worthy of the series. There may be some bloody scenes here but they were far from frightening given the comedic angle they were presented in.
All in all A Nasty Piece of Work is just passable and non challenging entertainment for those with an hour and a half to spare. Even the so called "twist" to the end is predictable which may serve the more easily gullible and less discerning viewer to leave with a triumphant feel as you tell yourself "I knew it!".
