Color Out of Space (2019)
Nicholas Cage's last movie Mandy in 2018, was a heavy handed no holds bar tale of demons, madness and revenge. It showcased Nicholas Cage's trademark looney mad behaviour in an appropriate premise. In the new movie Color Out of Space, Cage plays the head of an isolated family staying deep in the forests of New England, who experiences unexplained happenings and behavioural changes to himself and his family after a meteor lands unexpectedly literally at their backyard. This is based on a short story by the famed horror novelist H.P.Lovecraft. With such an exciting premise and background one can be excused for getting expectations high.
Unfortunately, it is a bit of a confusing mess. The weird stuff happen without explanations which I find unacceptable as a viewer as my time invested in the story is never satisfied and fulfilled. I also feel that all the mayhem and psychedelic things at happen cumulating with a loud noisy and colourful climax was confusing. Again without proper explanation on wtf we just watched, there is no payback and closure. This isn't exacting like Stanley Kubrick material. I also get the feeling that Nicholas Cage was hired here simply because of his association with weird movies and fondness to display acts of creative madness in his roles. His character here is all set up for this but I feel his performance was predictable and staged just to satisfy the Nicholas Cage fans expectations. It was also unfortunate that none of the other family members were interesting enough for the viewer to care about what happens to them.
So what we get here is a confusing piece of science fiction horror that starts off interesting enough but soon deteriorates to a messy ending. To be approached with caution and reservations.
